2012 Contest Manager Call posted by quixoticpixels

We'll be ringing in the new year in a month's time and with the new year comes a whole new batch of PatternReview contests. The Contest Committee hopes that you've all had a chance to look at the contest list for next year and plan to participate in some (or all) of them.

To get a head start on things and to make sure things run smoothly in the year to come, we're looking for for contest managers for the first 2 months of contests.

Who can be a contest manager? YOU can! It doesn't matter if you're a beginning seamstress or someone who can sew circles around Claire Schaeffer. All that's required is a love of sewing and a wish to contribute to this great community.

We'd love to see more people step forward and volunteer in one way or another. We are grateful to ladies like Imaan and JanNW and others who step forward time and time again, but PR has a HUGE membership and we would love to have the rest of you participate in this way.

Why volunteer as a contest manager? Managing contests can be a lot of fun and is a great way to get involved and build relationships with others on the site. Speaking from personal experience, I learned more, made more friends and gained more inspiration as a contest manager than I have when participating in PR in any other fashion. Even though contest managers can't win the prize, they can gain a lot from the experience.

Is managing a contest difficult? Your primary role as a contest manager is to act as a mentor to participants. You'll answer questions about the rules and occasionally help someone sort out their entry in the system. The Contest Committee will also help support you in any way it can.

More info about the job is available here

****

The following contests need managers:

Fabric Stash - January 1-31

Jeans Contest - January 15-February 15

Red Dress - February 1-28

Challenge Contest - February 1-15

If you're interested in managing a contest in 2012, please post here and we'll PM you with the rules prior to the start of the contest. Thanks in advance for volunteering - contests are an important - and fun - part of PR, and they couldn't happen without YOU!
ewww tax time posted by BMoyer

Hi everyone,
it is that time again. I was hoping to get a discussion started about how everyone handles this.
I will get us started by saying that since my business is so small, I am having to do my bookkeeping myself. I use quickbooks simple start and so far it has worked well. I am a little disappointed now though because apparently they have fixed it where you can only use an online version with a monthly fee, which is sometimes more than my profit for the month.
Also, I had a girl doing it for me but she is fighting with cancer right now and
asked that she be relieved of the duty, understandably so.
But that leaves me in a predicament because, although I can input information into quickbooks I don't always understand why. There are entries I need to understand better.
Anywho, what about everyone else. Do you do your own books? Do you have someone help you?

Last post by BMoyer at Wed 25 Jan 2012 08:19:44 AM Total posts: 3

Jeans Contest - Official thread posted by treefrog

G'day everyone!

I'll be your contest manager for the Jeans contest.

On a personal note, I got into sewing as I was having heaps of trouble finding a good pair of jeans. Being short was half my problem but it was also in a time where distressed jeans were the fashion and most of the stuff in the shops were in worse condition than the pair I was wanting to replace. I still have those jeans today although I must say my sewing has improved a little since then.

So whether you are are on the journey of making your first pair of jeans, a seasoned professional or somewhere in between I hope you can join me. I'm looking forward to watching the gallery fill up with lots of great jeans.

The rules are as follows, but as always, please don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Jeans Contest
January 15th - February 15th, 2012

This contest is to make a pair of jeans for yourself or someone else. For the purposes of this contest, we will define jeans as trousers made out of denim. You can sew anything such as the traditional five-pocket jeans, skinny jeans, slouchy jeans, or trouser jeans. Utlimately, your jeans will be judged on how well they fit given the style, how nicely they are sewn and the special details you add to make them stand out from the crowd. Jeans can look a lot alike, so focus your efforts on making your jeans special.
For lots of great tips on sewing jeans, please consult this thread: http://sewing.patternreview.com/cgi-bin/sewingclasses/board.pl?t=40960

The rules for this contest:

1) Make a pair of jeans that fits the spirit of the description above.
2) Your jeans can be any color of the rainbow, however, they must be made out of denim.
3) You may use stretch or non-stretch denim; however, the fabric must be woven and the lycra content can be no more than 10%.
4) You must take a minimum of 3 photos for this contest. We would like to see the front of the jeans and the back of the jeans when worn. We would also like to see at least one photo of a special detail you added to your jeans, such as topstitching, embroidery, rivets, etc.

Prizes
Sponsored by:

The 1st and 2nd place winners will be decided by member vote.

First Place Prize: $75 Gift Certificate
Second Place Prize: $50 Gift Certificate

Standard Contest Rules

1. Unless otherwise stated in the rules, patterns may be drafted, tweaked, and muslined before the contest date, but fabric for the pieces entered may not be laid out or cut till the start date of the contest. Fabric may be pretreated before the contest date.

2. Items intended for sale, or for which you were or will be paid to make, do not qualify for any contest, but items made for charity are welcome!

3. Unless otherwise stated in the rules, all reviews written for a contest entry must include a picture of the entry.

Contest Eligibility

1. Any member of Pattern Review, either paying (FoPR) or non-paying, who's been a registered member on the site for 90 days prior to the start of a contest is eligible to enter.

2. Any member of Pattern Review, either paying (FoPR) or non-paying, who's been a registered member on the site for 90 days prior to the end of a contest is eligible to vote in a contest.

3. Any member who's won 1st place in a contest on Pattern Review ended in the previous 4 months is ineligible to win another contest (for that 4 month period).

Guidelines for Voting on Contests:

Because of the high quality of the garments we're seeing entered in PR Contests, we're setting forth some guidelines that may help you choose when voting.

You may choose to assign a point value to each of the following criteria in order to narrow down your choices.

1. How well does the garment/collection/ensemble/item fit the criteria stated in the contest rules? How well does it fit the spirit of the rules?

2. Are the construction methods, including but not limited to seam finishes, lining techniques, etc, well suited to the design? To the fabric?

3. Is the fabric choice well suited to the design? Are the lining and interfacing choices appropriate?

4. Is the review complete and well written?

5. Taking into account the stated ability level of the entrant, how well does the garment fit?

6. Creative points. You may choose to give credit here for extras including embellishment, creative interpretation of patterns, creativity in creating a pattern, or even for having the restraint to leave something strikingly simple.

7. Complexity of the project. Relate this to the skill level of the participant. If a participant is a beginner then a princess seam may get the same complexity level as an underarm gusset gets for an advanced sewer. This is purely subjective, but a complex garment might garner more points than a simple one if a tie-breaker is needed.
Recommended quilting books posted by Elaray

I've been a garment sewer for almost 40 years. I took my first quilting class about 1 1/2 years ago and have made 2 quilts in addition to my class quilt. I'd like to purchase a comprehensive book for quilting, much like the Reader's Digest Complete guide to Sewing for garment sewers. Any recommendations?

Last post by Elaray at Wed 25 Jan 2012 09:03:17 AM Total posts: 1

I have to thin out my machines posted by maide

I am moving back to Australia after 20 years in the US. I have been picking up irresistible sewing machines over the years and can't decid which ones to leave in the States and which ones to bring with me and use via transformer. I have two backup Kenmores which will be sold first. I can't imagine life without my 201 Singer, complete with cabinet, but room may have me changing my mind on that one and then we come to the Bernina's  The 810 I can let go even though it's a little gem and I won't get back what I have put into it of late (new circuit board in the pedal and complete service overhaul). Instead I will probably take the 135S for portability (although less so with a transformer  Then there is the Artista 170 which is my go to, but I know I will never use all the embroidery paraphenalia (sp?) that goes with it. My Elna 5 thread and Viking 3 thread will also be coming with me I think. Maybe the Viking could be rehomed though....

I am in Aus now caring for my mother and will be going back in March to finalize the move and sale of the house etc, so in the meantime while here I sort of threw a spanner in the works and needed to feed my sewing addiction, so I bought a 931 Bernina for $125 plus new pedal. Talk about a tank, love it now also though and it won't need a transformer.

I need the voice of reason to scream at me right now. Maybe I should just sell the lot of them and start fresh...

Last post by Maia B at Wed 25 Jan 2012 09:07:01 AM Total posts: 18

What type of cotton would be appropriate for lining a dress? posted by CraftAddict

I sweat easily and the typical satiny types of lining are not my friend! Would a solid "quilting" type of cotton be okay? I read a review that a girl made a shirt out of quilting cotton and she was displeased with the result, but maybe it would be okay for just a lining? Or maybe muslin? Not sure.

Last post by CraftAddict at Wed 25 Jan 2012 09:12:43 AM Total posts: 10

So I promised at the DC PR Day to organize a Baltimore trip after the holidays, and I figure it would be good to pick a date sooner rather than later. We have to go with a Saturday since A Fabric Place is not open on Sundays.

eta: the plan is for January 28! Snow date Feb 11.

The tentative plan:

? DeBois Textiles for vintage clothing and fabrics
1835 Washington Blvd. Baltimore

? Coffee/tea/snacks near A Fabric Place, tentatively at Pepe's Pizza

Post in this thread to get a pm of cell number if you want to meet up!
Stash Sew Along posted by jannw

Now that the Stash Contest is over, several of us have decided to continue to sew our stash. If you didn't join the contest and are interested in "de-stashifing" for any reason, please join us.

The contest offered motivation, a goal to reach, which at first seemed to be unobtainable, a chance to try new patterns, the impetus to start a long planned for project, and the opportunity to do so in good company.. I know I increased my skills by sewing everyday, used patterns that I've had for years and never tried, learned some new techniques, dusted off some old skills, all the while making room or new stash.

If you would like to join in, I would only ask that you check in periodically, let us know what you are sewing and how it is progressing. This way, we can all continue to be inspired and motivated.
Other than that, there are no rules. Stash is what you, personally consider it to be-it has no age limit- sew what you want to sew at your own pace. If life intervens, as it will, do not feel guilty-take care of things, and come back to us when you can.
If you participated in the contest and need time to get your sewing room, home and family back in order, do so, and join in when you are able.

If you want to set personal goals, post them here and we'll cheer you on, give advice and encouragment, and keep each other motivated.

I will be sewing in the One Pattern Contest starting today and using some of my stash for that. I'm using a piece of stash fabric for my basic, unaltered version and have several more versions with stash planned.
My goal for the coming year is to sew 10 yards a month. I did 20 a month for the contest and that may have been a little to much for even my minimal housekeeping skills. I like having stash and intend to keep buying, but hopefully more varied pieces. I need more knits and less silk! But I would like to reduce what I have to a more managable level.

That said, please join in..I need company to keep on track!
Skirt hem curiosity posted by ChickenFreak

Something I've been wondering:

It's common to try on a skirt and use a hem marker or an assistant to mark the hem an even distance from the floor, trim it, and hem it.

But in an ideal situation, would one instead alter a skirt pattern perfectly, so that the hem hangs a perfectly even distance from the floor? And is that situation a fantasy, or is it plausible to do that? I'd guess that it would depend on the type of skirt, but I don't know if it's plausible for none, some, or most skirts?

Last post by LisainWV at Wed 25 Jan 2012 09:27:53 AM Total posts: 7

Updating Style, Maybe Sew Only Foreign Patterns? posted by Lady_Mame

I have never had a sense of style and fashion. Encountering a display of clothing, I instantly begin channeling my Father's alleged "White Guy" style. Given our druthers we show up tough but not exactly attractive pants and a plaid over shirt. The hemline is never QUITE the right length on the pants. There isn't a pair of sorta-funny-sorta-fugly practical shoes that hasn't found love in our closets. On the upside, we're recognizable in a crowd. We always show up looking like we do.

We both walk kind of funny.

We both work in technical-type work (thank god) but I have a suspicion that if I could manage more than once a week to look like I got dressed like it was on purpose I'd fair better. I've thought this for a couple of years. I've read the blogs, I've gone snoop shopping (ugh, stores) I've really tried.

I'm no good.

Do y'all think maybe if I switched to doing up foreign patterns like Burda and Style arc that it would offset them fugly practical shoes, and plaids that I love so much? I mean, this is a step I can do. I know I can hold myself to this.

But will it help?

Last post by allycovey at Wed 25 Jan 2012 09:34:45 AM Total posts: 34

free motion quilting is it really possible posted by Sewwolf

for someone to do this that can't draw, paint etc? I've been watching Leah Day videos like mad. And then I show some design quilt pics she drew and realize the woman can draw no wonder she can free motion so nicely. I was always convinced to do this well you needed basically the same talent as a drawer/painter has. So I'm back to wondering if it is really possible to learn this or must you have a talent for it like drawing. Let me know if you have no artistic talent yet you can free motion and I mean by free motion not following lines from a template, but going along free style. I don't want to put a lot of time into trying to learn something I will really never be able to do.

Last post by Sewwolf at Wed 25 Jan 2012 09:36:43 AM Total posts: 19

Heavy knitted yardage posted by HeyDollface

I've recently come across 2 seperate pieces of lovely ivory colored knitted fabric. Not knit as in basic stretch for t-shirts but actual knit as in sweater material. there's about 2 yards of each, one a tighter gauge than the other. my serger handbook says i can use sweater knits for regular patterns if i stabilize the pieces by using a zig zag stitch to stop the cut fabric pieces from unraveling before being serged or sewn. I figure i can draft a basic "tube skirt" pattern and it'd be cute with tights but i'm fairly new to sewing and don't want to ruin my find with a made up pattern. any suggestions for patterns that may work with sweater knits? i'd prefer a nice sweater dress or easy pull on skirt that works with 2 yards or less. (i'm typically a 10 in patterns). thanks for any suggestions-Jen

Last post by allycovey at Wed 25 Jan 2012 09:40:42 AM Total posts: 4

Sewing from BurdaStyle Magazine 2012 posted by MarinaVK

A new thread for projects based on Burdastyle Magazine 2012. The January issue is out, holidays almost over - time to start sewing again :-)

Everyone can join!
at any time!

The goal is to sew at least one garment from each issue (but if you can't make it, chat about what you managed to sew, or what you want to sew :-) It's about having fun sewing from Burda 2012!

Dividing it by year makes it more manageable, that's why Burda 2012.

Would be great to see some images and/ or links!

Hi Everyone,

I thought it might be a good idea to start a new topic for any bug report. To clarify -- a "bug" in computer terminology is an "issue" or a "problem" with a script. So if something is not working the way its supposed to, please report it here. I will watch this topic closely and try to fix as soon as possible.

Note that this topic is not meant for feature enhancements... only things which are not functioning properly.

What's the best way to add an older pattern posted by GwenH

I want to add an older pattern, but I don't want it to infringe on any other patterns of the same pattern number by the same company. I couldn't find an answer with a search so is there any standard?

My current idea is to add this older pattern with the pattern number with the date appended afterward. That will make it appear to be a different pattern than the latest pattern with the same number. I hate when the patterns get all mooshed together!

Is this an OK approach, or is there a preferred way?
Fabric Stash Contest 2012 - Official Thread posted by Aroura

Hello everyone, are you excited for the great line-up of contest for 2012? I know I am! And reducing your fabric stash is a great way to start the New Year, dare I suggest, even a good idea for a New Years resolution. :)
My name is Aroura, and I have the pleasure of being your contest manager, and will be checking this thread daily, and responding to any questions, concerns, etc., ASAP until the contest is over. Please feel free to PM me as well if you would prefer.

Sign up here!
Contest Report

Fabric Stash Contest
January 1 through January 31, 2012

Contest Rules:

The objective of this contest is for each contestant to reduce the size of his or her fabric stash.

1) Sew an item (usable or wearable) using fabric in your stash. It counts as stash if you had it in your possession for at least 6 months (so prior to July 1, 2011). If you aren't certain when you got the fabric, your educated guess is fine; the concept is to exclude more recent purchases, not track exact dates.

2) Any sewn item is allowed (clothing, accessories, home dec, pets). However, each individual project is limited to 5 yards eligible for contest entry. (Curtain sets count as one 'project'. Slip covers count as one project per piece of furniture.)

3) Points will be awarded based on the total yards sewn up by each contestant during the contest. Each yard sewn earns the participant one point.

4) Any item entered must have been made entirely in the contest time frame (no earlier than January 1, 2012, and finished and reviewed by the end of January 31, 2012 Eastern time). Item must be completely finished to count. (It's ok if you have to press or wash it still.

5) Definition of Age of Fabric: The age of stash yardage is determined from the date the fabric came into your possession.

6) Have fun! Even if you know you can't do the most yardage, enter your yardage to increase the contest total. We all love seeing how much fabric gets sewn up during the contest, and at the end we are all winners, whether we sewed one yard or one hundred yards!

How is the Winner Determined?

The first and second places winners are the people who have used the most fabric during the contest period.

Frequently Asked Questions:

1) Can I do anything beforehand?

Patterns can be ones used before, or you can make muslins before hand. Fabric can be pre-washed before hand. Any other work with that fabric must wait until the start of the contest.

2) What if I don't have enough fabric to make my item?

You may purchase fabric to complete a project but only the yardage that was stash yardage may be counted. For example, if you need additional fabric to cut out sleeves, and buy another 2/3 yard, that 2/3 yard is not included.

3) What types of things can I make?

Clothes, home dec, costumes, doggy beds, Linus blankets, anything that can be sewn from fabric counts - as long as it is useable or wearable by the intended person or object. This means muslins do not qualify.

4) I bought this 1908 fabric last year; is it's age 102 years old?

No; it's stash age is only 6 months or so. Another example: If it was your grandma's and she had it for 20 years, then she gave it to you for the 4th of July last year, that fabric has only been in your stash less than a year - not 20 years plus 8 months.

5) Can I count these old pants that I want to make into a skirt?

No. Stash is fabric in its natural state only (so to speak). Recycling garments, curtains, or other items does not fit with this contest.

6) I sewed 2.5 yards. Does that round to 3?

No, it counts as 2.5 yards, and two points. When you sew another 1/2 yard, you will reach 3 yards and 3 points.

7) But someone can make a big home dec project using oodles of yards and I'm making this complex...

Don't knock it 'til you've tried it. Home dec isn't as easy as you might think. And the goal here is to use up YOUR stash in the way YOU want. So if home dec is what you need, great! If a tailored jacket with welt pockets and hand-stitched lining is what you need, great! Everyone has the choice to make anything they want for the contest, as long as it uses stash fabric.

8) What counts as a yard of fabric?

Fabric is any material that is wider than 24 inches. Everything below this width is a trim.

9) If a pattern envelope countains patterns for multiple garments, e.g. a top, skirt, trousers and jacket, how should the individual garments be counted? As one or multiple projects?

You may count each item as a separate project.

10) If I make the same item multiple times, do I have to write a separate review for each?

No, you do not have to write separate reviews for each. I will be reviewing the contest report to make sure participants don't go over the 5 yard rule, so it's important for you to clearly indicate within your review the total number of the items and the total number of yards sewn for the contest.

11) Are photos required?

Photos are encouraged. Pictures are worth 1,000 words!

Tips for Keeping Track of Yards and Points

Contestants should enter the yards including decimals. The points are a total of what they have sewn, rounded down (roughly). So if they sew 1.5 yards, that is one point. If they sew a 2nd project that uses 1.5 yards, they then have 3 points.

If they have one project that is less than a yard, that would typically be considered no points until they sew some additional projects.

Prizes!
Sponsored by

Second Prize: $50 Gift Certificate

Rules that apply to all contests:

1. All reviews must be entered for submission by 11:59 PM Eastern Time on the last day of the contest. Contest dates will be listed for each contest.

2. Unless otherwise stated in the rules, patterns may be drafted, tweaked, and muslined before the contest date, but fabric for the pieces entered may not be laid out or cut till the start date of the contest. Fabric may be pretreated before the contest date.

3. Items intended for sale, or for which you were or will be paid to make, do not qualify for any contest, but items made for charity are welcome!

I will also be sewing along for fun. I have 3 fabrics so far that I have dug out and set aside that have been in my stash a while and that I plan to put to use, finally!
I do hope many of you will join me!
Question: Can I submit the same project to this contest and to the jeans contest?
Answer: Yes you can! If your project fits the requirement of both contests, it can be entered into both.
This is true of all contests and entries as well.
Enabler alert.. sewing room decor posted by poorpigling
Oh man.. I should stay outta the stores.. I see too much I like..
Of course I see too much I like on line too.. but........

Went to Bed Bath and Beyond.. noticed some pictures.. about 12 X l8 high.. looked a lot like paper pattern covers without writing.. in other words.. ladies dressed in dresses sorta.. cute .. but thats not the best thing they had..

Back in the department with hooks and so forth.. there were those wire dressforms.. some about 20 inches tall. but thats not the best thing.. the best thing I saw were...

Three smaller wire dress forms in a package.. about four or five inches high.. with hooks .. so you can put them on the wall and hang a bag or such from them.. l9.99 per package.. but you could use those 20 percent off coupons easily.

Then I went to Hancocks.. will I ever learn not to look at the new stuff until I have used up all my old.. guess not.. as they had that french script fabric.. looks like linen background.. and the postage stamp fabric.. again.. same background.. In more than one colorway too. Then .. to make matters worse.. the clerk tells me they have a lot of this french stuff coming in..

Strangely enough I am seeing more sewing themed items everywhere. even in stamps and papercrafts.. Sew we are gaining in popularity ladies..

You better believe I am going to snag those hooks.and they would make a fabulous gift for someone that sews.. and I am not saying that just cause my Birthday is the l3th either..

Last post by Invisigal at Wed 25 Jan 2012 09:55:52 AM Total posts: 32
