Hello all, does anyone know of a pattern that would resemble the gown in the photos? I'm looking for something very flowy and ethereal and love the dress pictured. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Decisions: Babylock Ellegante, Janome 350E or Inovis 4000D posted by Kisha

Please help me with pro's and con's on these machines. I'm really looking for a machine to do embroidery primarily (why the 350E is in the line up) as I already have a good sewing machine. I found a dealer who has the 350E for $1399, but for the low $2000 I can get a used (but upgraded) Ellegante 1 or used (but upgraded) Innovis 4000D (for a bit more).

Now I know that the Ellegante and Innovis are the same machine except for the Disney aspect. I want the machine primarily to embroider for my little girl, so the Disney, Nickelodean, etc. designs do come in to play. The Ellegante was able to read the Nickelodean cards, but not the Disney of course. I also like the new continous border hoop capability. I keep envisioning all these little girl dresses with embroidery around the tail. But considering you still have to rehoop to continue the border, I'm not sure how much easier this new hoop is versus just rehooping in general.

If I go with the Janome, I would have to invest in converter software and a reader/writer (which I found a good economical set-up solution in a thread from Lunar_C ... THANKS!). I would also have the embroider field limitation versus the larger machines.

Well ... any comments are appreciated to help me muddle through this decision

Last post by Kisha at Sat 07 Nov 2009 04:30:39 AM Total posts: 13

Little Black Dress (LBD) Contest posted by unfinishedprojects

I am pleased to announce PR's first Little Black Dress Contest!

This contest is to make yourself a 'Little Black Dress', or LBD. To establish a common base for the definition of a LBD, here is a description from Wikipedia:
A little black dress is an evening or cocktail dress, cut simply and often with a short skirt, originally made popular in the 1920s by the fashion designer Coco Chanel. Intended by Chanel to be long-lasting, versatile, affordable, accessible to the widest market possible and in a neutral color. Its continued ubiquity is such that many refer to it by the abbreviation LBD.

The "little black dress" is considered essential to a complete wardrobe by many women and fashion observers, who believe it a "rule of fashion" that every woman should own a simple, elegant black dress that can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion: for example, worn with a jacket and pumps for daytime business wear or with more ornate jewelry and accessories for evening. Because it is meant to be a staple of the wardrobe for a number of years, the style of the little black dress ideally should be as simple as possible: a short black dress that is too clearly part of a trend would not qualify because it would soon appear dated.
The rules for this contest:
1) Make a dress that fits the spirit of the description above.
2) The color should be similar to black. So black, dark chocolate brown, or dark charcoal would qualify.
3) A minimum of 3 pictures are required in your review: one of the dress unadorned, one of the dress as a daytime look, and one of the dress accessorized for evening wear.

A word on pictures: Taking pictures of a dark garment is a challenge. Taking your pictures outside during a fairly bright part of the day will help. If need be, lightening the unadorned pictures to show details can also help. If your pictures don't show your dress than people can't see what you want them to vote on.

*Rules that apply to all contests:

1. Contests begin on the 1st of the month, and all reviews must be entered for submission by midnight Eastern Time on the last day of the month.

2. Unless otherwise stated in the rules, patterns may be drafted, tweaked, and muslined before the contest date, but fabric for the pieces entered may not be laid out or cut till the start date of the contest. Fabric may be pretreated before the contest date.

3. Items intended for sale, or for which you were or will be paid to make, do not qualify for any contest, but items made for charity are welcome!

4. Unless otherwise stated in the rules, all reviews written for a contest entry must include a picture of the entry.

Contest Eligibility

1. Any member of Pattern Review, either paying (FoPR) or non-paying, who's been a registered member on the site for 90 days prior to the start of a contest is eligible to enter.

2. Any member of Pattern Review, either paying (FoPR) or non-paying, who's been a registered member on the site for 90 days prior to the end of a contest is eligible to vote in a contest.

3. Any member who's won a prize (1st or 2nd place) in a contest on Pattern Review ended in the previous six months is ineligible to win another contest for a period of 6 months.

Prizes!

seam finishes for a princess seam? posted by newbie2008

I am making a simple princess seam blouse out of 100% cotton. It is a very ravely fabric. I am planning to do Hong Kong Seams for seam finishes for most of the seams. However, what do you do suggest for a princess seam? Just pink it?
Bias binding vs. bias facing posted by newbie2008

I am working on a pattern (KS 3280) that has a bias facing on the jewel neckline (a button-down blouse). I just found a fabric from my stash that I'd like to use as a binding that will give the blouse some pizazz (the main bit of the shirt is 100% kona cotton, and the fabric I'd like to add is Indonesian Ikat), so my options as I can see them are:

1) use the ikat as a single bias binding (although how do I deal with the facing where the buttons go, and it is pretty thick to have to deal with 4 layers of ikat), or

2) do I just the cotton bias facing as per the directions, and then topstitch a band of the ikat on the front of the bodice, kind of like what one would do with rick rack. (but will this look "homemade"?)

Suggestions? Also, if I would also like to use the ikat down the front of the blouse to provide some vertical interest how do I do this?

Thanks in advance.

Last post by newbie2008 at Sat 07 Nov 2009 02:57:53 AM Total posts: 1

Next PRDU weekend ? posted by Mel.J

I'm happy to put my hand up as general co-ordinator of this again, but not for doing all the jobs. I know you'll all help if it's going to happen!

How many people are interested in coming on a PR weekend?? In or near Melbourne next March?

Here's two possibilities, comment on your preference & add in your own ideas...

(a) shopping, dinners & short help-each-other style workshops

(b) paid expert help, actual sewing weekend
They had one of the F600s at the Quilt Show in Houston. Oh. My. God. This machine is amazing. It WILL be my next sewing machine amazing.

The motor is probably the quietest I've ever heard. While I was playing with it, I could hear the conversations in the booths around me perfectly.

I folded up some gnarly denim - it sewed from 2 layers up to 14 then back down to 2 without missing a beat! No jean-a-ma-jig required!!!! And the motor didn't slow down or hesitate one bit at 14 layers. The stitches came out perfect.

It also comes with all the feet I use, so no additional purchases necessary!
How to Pivot around Corners

from artfulsage page 161
Date: 6/20/07 5:57 PM
I asked how to do outside corners with the CoverPro 1000 and received some good ideas. I also e-mail Janome education with the question and thought I would post their answer for every one.
Here it is:
You must remember that the coverstitch is created with two or three
needles so a perfect 90 degree pivot at corners will not be possible.
But with planning and patience a corner can be achieved in this manner:
Stop slightly ahead of the corner and manually turn the hand wheel until
the needles are in the lowest position. You will hear a slight "tick"
when the needles are in the lowest position. Lift the presser foot and
turn the fabric slightly in the direction you need to achieve either an
inside or outside corner. Manually turn the hand wheel until the needles
have made one stitch and are again in the lowest position. Lift the
presser foot and turn the fabric slightly in the needed direction.
Continue on for as many stitches as it takes to turn the corner. When
you have made the turn start the machine and sew as usual.
Thank you very much for your response about the extension table, Vonne. The Elna 434 extension table is exactly the same as the Janome CP1000 table. I have bought one.

I have received my Nina CP1000 (it is exactly the same one as Janome CP1000) with accessories on Thursday and I have ordered the binding attachments from the guy on ebay. I love this machine.

I really want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for this forum. I read all of the info on this forum before I have ordered the machine.
Enjoy your sewing.
Plus-Size Sew-Along posted by Sherril Miller

The purpose of this sew-along is to make a garment, outfit, or even a capsule wardrobe if you're ambitions, that fits your lifestyle and expresses your personality, and fits the body you have right now. So many plus-sized women decide to wait until you've lost X amount of weight to sew up your beautiful fabrics. Or, if you do lose some weight, you are afraid to make a specific garment because, if the weight is regained (which happens to so many of us), then you can't wear your fabulous garment any longer, so why bother? Instead, for this sew-along, plus-size women can start showing your bodies love by dressing them beautifully, just the way it is right now.

Note to moderators So many plus-sized women feel uncomfortable posting in the other threads that are read by possibly judgmental (at least in our minds) people that we'd prefer to keep this topic in the plus-size category instead of the sew-along threads. The plus-size category was created so plus-sized women would feel they had a safe place to post. Thank you for your consideration in this matter.

Last post by o3b at Sat 07 Nov 2009 01:45:04 AM Total posts: 4142

Went to a sewing store and feel very frustrated posted by myblusky

Today I made my list of three stores to visit that sell used sewing machines. I went to the first store and left feeling so frustrated that I didn't bother going to the other two stores.

When I went to the first and only store today, they kept trying to sell me a new or refurbished Brother machine which also does embroidery. I told them I was just looking for a basic machine as I haven't sewn since college. The sales clerk went on and on about the Brother machines and said she wasn't on commission, but this is what she used and recommended. These machines were $450 to $700!!!!! Not my price range!

The store only had a few used machines and she sort of waved over them and then started talking about the Brother machines again.

I've done a lot of research and I thought I wanted to get an older Singer possibly 200 or 300 series, maybe even 400 series. My other choice was a Kenmore 158 or possibly 148. I've been looking on Ebay and Craigslist.

I feel really frustrated because so many people recommend going to a sewing store and buying from them, but I feel they were pushing me in a totally different direction. I'm also starting to question if the sales clerk was right and that I shouldn't get an older machine.

Please help with any suggestions. Thank you for taking the time to read and reply to my message!

Last post by MarthaA24 at Sat 07 Nov 2009 01:44:07 AM Total posts: 18

I'm about to do a vampire show with two of my harder to fit actors. One is 49 chest but a 60 girth. The other a 60 chest , 66 girth.

I've got the directions to make a full abdomin adjustment. (IE slit side front to arm hold pivot point , and open it up enough to acomendate the difference in belly room. )

My concern is how much is too much? The difference of Guy 2 isn't as considerable, but Guy 1 we are going to need to add about 12 inches !
Wardrobe Contest - Official Discussion posted by quixoticpixels

Hi everyone! I'm going to be managing the wardrobe contest starting in September and am very excited about it. After looking at past contests, I know this one is going to be fantastic.

Since many of you are most likely "chomping at the bit" to plan your wardrobes, I'll post the rules without further ado.

Total pieces required: 10

These need to consist of:

4 bottoms

5 tops

1 topper (see definition below)

Additional rules:

All tops must go with all bottoms, and the topper must go with all outfits.

Minimum of one print fabric must be incorporated.

A dress may be substituted for either one top or one bottom, but it must still follow the rule that it needs to go with either all the tops or all the bottoms.

You must do a 'wardrobe review' for the contest. You should also review all of the individual patterns used for your review. Include in the main wardrobe review links to those individual reviews.

Pictures of all items are required for voting. A composite picture is highly recommended, since it helps showcase the wardrobe and helps others see what was accomplished.

All cutting and sewing must be done between the contest dates to qualify.

Definitions

1. A topper is anything that has the basic function of covering your top. So a tailored jacket (not necessarily recommended unless you sew REALLY fast) counts. A loose jacket counts. A cardigan counts. A poncho counts. Ask the contest manager if you aren?t certain.

2. For purposes of this contest, a print is any fabric that has a patterned design on it:

stripes

checks

polka dots

plaids

geometric shapes

organic shapes

etc.

A "print" implies that ink be applied to the surface of the fabric somehow, but we're not going to get that technical. If it looks like a print, it's a print :) Our goal is to encourage you to use at least one fabric that isn't one solid color.

Prizes!

First and second place winners will receive Fabric.com gift certificates in the amounts of $175 & $125, respectively.

Winners of this contest will be decided based on the number of votes you get.

Good Luck to everyone!

FAQ & clarifications
----
1. Can I enter more than 10 pieces?
You can enter more pieces in your Wardrobe as long as you meet the requirements above.

2. Can I enter items from my other contests on or outside of PatternReview.com?
As long as your entries meet the requirements of this contest you can enter the items.

3. Can I start sewing/cutting before the contest start date?
No. All the sewing and cutting should be done within the contest dates. You can use the time before that to make your wardrobe plan, test your patterns, pre-treat your fabric etc.

**********************************************

4. How should I enter the items in the contest?

Entering the Contest

click on ?contest gallery? in the sidebar

Select ?Wardrobe Contest? from the list.

Click on ?Enter the Contest.?

Follow the prompts.

Create reviews for each item you sew. DO NOT enter the individual reviews into the contest report.

Create your Master Review

When we refer to a ?Master Review,? we mean a review that provides an overview of your entire wardrobe. This review should discuss the theme of your wardrobe, e.g. a travel wardrobe, a wardrobe for an expecting mom, a business wardrobe, a casual wardrobe for days at home, etc. It could also discuss your color palette, fabric selection, etc.

The Master Review MUST contain links to the pattern reviews you wrote for the individual garments comprising the wardrobe.

Your Master Review should contain a composite image of all your wardrobe items. Please see info on creating storyboards.

The Master Review is the ONLY review you should add to the Contest Report. Again, please do not add individual pattern reviews to the Contest Report.

To create the Master Review, you?ll create a new review just like always, except you?ll need to fill out the pattern company and pattern number fields as follows:

Select "Other" as the Pattern Company.

From the drop-down menu for pattern number, select ?Wardrobe Contest Sep 2009.?

As you make items for your entry, you can just edit your master WIP review and add more info, i.e. add new links.

Until your wardrobe is finished, you can save your Master Review as a ?work in progress.? This option is found at the bottom of the review form.

Add your Master Review to the Contest Report

Click on ?all contests? in the sidebar.

Click on ?Wardrobe Contest.?

Click on ?Enter Items?

Follow the prompts.

**********************************************

5. Are knitted (machine or hand) or crocheted items allowed?
No, they are not.

6. Do I need to do a storyboard?
No, it's not a requirement. If you'd like to do a storyboard, then please do. However, at the end of the contest you do need to have one photo with all your items in it.

7. Can I amend my storyboard after the contest start date?
Yes! As long as your wardrobe pieces all tie together by the end of the contest.

8. If I've entered an item in the contest and it turns out that it doesn't coordinate with my wardrobe, can I replace it?
Yes, you can.

9. Do the wardrobe items need to be coordinating?
Yes. The whole wardrobe should be cohesive and look like a wardrobe. Something you'll be able to mix and match in a jiffy and not worry about it. Any extra items you make (over the minimum 10) should also match.

10. Can I use the same pattern for more than one item?
Yes.

11. If a jacket is to be worn alone, can it count as a top?
Yes, if a jacket is made to be worn alone like a blouse, it can count as a top.

12. Here's what you'll need for the final photo:
The final photo should be a composite photo showing all your wardrobe items. All the items should be photographed on a dressform or on the person for whom this wardrobe was made. You don't need to photograph all the combinations - each item only needs to be shown once.

Tutorials for Storyboards

Here are some tutorials for creating storyboards:

1. Paint.net Tutorial (the techniques shown here can be used with most image editing programs)

2. Powerpoint Storyboard Tutorial

3. ConnieBJ's Powerpoint Tutorial

4. Mosaic Maker (requires free flickr account) - see pages 10 and 13 of this thread for brief tutorials.

5. Mac Storyboard Tutorial

How to Add Photos to This Thread

Here's how you add a photo to a thread.

1. Upload your photo/storyboard to an image host such as your PR photo gallery, flickr or photobucket.
2. Right-click on the photo you want to add to the forum thread.
3. Select "properties" from the drop-down list.
4. Use your mouse to completely highlight the address (url).
5. Copy the url (CTRL-C)
6. Go to the thread where you want to post the image.
7. Click on the "post reply" button.
8. Above the text box, you'll see some buttons. Click on the "image" button.
9. Paste (CTRL-V) the url into the box that appears.
10. Click "OK."
11. Click on the "post message" button.

Flickr Photo Group

Since many of us host our photos on flickr, I thought it would be fun to have a special flickr group set up for this contest. Feel free to join the group and to add your photos to the group pool. This is not a requirement, nor is it meant to replace participation on the PatternReview forum and Review Gallery.
Help! Need to know about slinky knits. posted by TheSewingGirl

I have been away for some time. Just got my life in order where I have the time and space for sewing.

I have sewn a couple tops with the slinky material. Just copied pieces from Chico's. The hems give me problems, any tips? Also, has anyone lined them, or something for a little warmth? I am a FL transplant in Chicago. ha!

You ladies on here are how I learned to sew, and I would appreciate any help here. Thanks!

Last post by moushka at Fri 06 Nov 2009 11:46:09 PM Total posts: 4

Casual work place wear posted by tourist

I think we have been around this topic before, but my recent trip to the hospital got me thinking about it again. It really appeared to me that some staff took the attitude that, since they were wearing scrubs, they really had no responsibility to be tidy or even decently groomed. One nurse looked as though she hadn't washed her hair in a week, I saw dirty, nasty, worn out crocs and running shoes and a general aura of unkemptness with a lot of the staff I saw.

Of course, there was the other extreme, with a young clerk who had perfect hair, nails and makeup (cute and blonde, too. I wasn't so sick that DH didn't notice. :D ), our doctor, who was tucked in, tidy and generally put together, in spite of the scrubs.

I realize hospitals are just one place where this happens. In child care we get a lot of people who think that just because we are with kids we don't have to dress decently. But I was brought up to believe that if I consider myself to be a professional (and certainly nurse used to be kind of the ultra professional for women) I should look the part. Naturally, I don't wear a 3 piece suit and heels to work, but I do make sure I am clean and decently groomed. I wonder if, in hospitals, there is an attitude of "we're saving lives here - no time for frivolous things like fashion" or something like that?

Last post by quathy at Fri 06 Nov 2009 11:16:39 PM Total posts: 6

Needle threader definietly (you pull the lever down located at the side of the machine).

The space from the right of the needle.

the convenient box (which is attached to the machine its also dettachable when using freearm).
30 minutes a day of sewing posted by TalyQ

I have had such a hard time getting back into my sewing (room) nook and actually get a garment finished after having a busy summer filled with other activities. I know if I somehow make myself spend every day just a little bit of time sewing (or cutting, fitting, etc.) there would be some progress and I probably will not be able to stop (knowing myself well).

Anybody want to join me? (unless there is already a thread like this - in that case, please point me to it) I would want to check in at least once a week and report how it went.

Last post by Sewnknit at Fri 06 Nov 2009 11:10:51 PM Total posts: 388

Agonizing on which machine to get! posted by RJFoote

My husband surprised me by telling me to get what makes me happy but I still don't want to spend a huge fortune.
So now I'm agonizing over whether to get the Janome 200e, the Elna 8100, or the Kenmore Elite by Janome, or maybe something else all together. I looks like I can get one of these three between $450 and $750 after shipping/tax/etc. I really like the idea of the USB port so that knocked out the 300e and part of me yearns to have the sewing and embroidery combo offered by the Kenmore Elite, but this one would be refurbished so I'm waffling on this one, while the 200e or the Elna 8100 would be new never used machines. What would you choose in this price range for your first embroidery machine? Why do these decisions have to be so hard...lol

Last post by pittysmom101 at Fri 06 Nov 2009 10:54:54 PM Total posts: 7
