Anyone have the instructions for S3754 readily available? posted by KitnRose

I'm making up Simplicity 3754 in red twill to wear tomorrow (with, yes, a blue shirt and white belt) and can NOT find my instruction sheet. Naturally. I'm usually good about keeping all the parts of a pattern together but, well, it happens. If I can't find it soon I'll write to Simplicity for a replacement but unfortunately that doesn't help me get this skirt done tonight.

So does anyone have the pattern available and could help me out? All I need is the instructions for the belt carriers. Just how to do them. I THINK I fold the edges in to the center then topstitch both sides and that's it, no sewing at 5/8" and turning inside out, but just want to be certain. Thank you so, so much!

Last post by KitnRose at Fri 03 Jul 2009 11:16:50 PM Total posts: 2

Sewing Machine Feet posted by sewfairy

I have a Viking Sapphire 870Q, for which extra feet are quite expensive and have tried feet from my Brother Super Ace and they fit.

I have since bought more Brother feet and am now wondering if there are any other brands that would fit the Sapphire.

The feet from my Viking Iris also fit although they are a little narrower as the Iris has narrower feed dogs.

Does anyone have any idea if any other brands would be compatible?

Last post by sew2006 at Fri 03 Jul 2009 11:15:21 PM Total posts: 55

Pfaff vs. Babylock vs. Janome? posted by Marneymargules

I am shopping for an upgrade machine. I currently use an old pfaff and it has been great. The key things I want are the capabilities to sew thru many layers and a 1 step buttonholer. Some embroidery functions would be nice but not a must have...I'm not a quilter and would primarily be sewing apparel and crafts. I was shown the babylock and pfaff and janome and they felt that I got much more bang for my buck with Babylock...and it was simpler to use. I've always heard though that Pfaff is the best. Let me know...

thx.

Last post by poorpigling at Fri 03 Jul 2009 10:39:33 PM Total posts: 39

Beginner Contest and Advanced Beginner Contest posted by Annette1

One of the best features of Pattern Review (PR) is the contests that are open to all eligible PR members. Beginning July 1 and running through August 31, two such contests will be the Beginner Contest and the Advanced Beginner Contest. This is the discussion page for both such contests, and I, Annette, am your contest manager. It seems only fitting that I should be appointed as manager for these particular contests, because I am a beginner manager, this being my first assignment!

So as our first entry in the discussion thread, I will post the rules of the contests here. When in doubt, refer back to this post or, when in further doubt, feel free to post a question in this discussion forum. If I can't answer it (what's the odds, right?), I'll find somebody who can.

Link to Page Where You Can Join Contest PLEASE NOTE: If you try to join the contest and get a message that says you need to be a member for 90 days before entering the contest, then just start sewing and try again later. :o) There is a glitch in the system right now, and Deepika will get it fixed as soon as she can (probably sometime during the week of July 6). Be not deterred!

Contest Rules
Beginner Contest and Advanced Beginner Contest

July 1 through August 31, 2009

1. Two Separate Contests.

There are two separate contests in which to submit entries. You may enter one project in either the Beginner Contest or the Advanced Beginner Contest, but not both. Please take care to choose the correct contest BEFORE entering your project (see guidelines under No. 3 below). For voting purposes, the contest entries are being kept separate. For all other purposes, this discussion board will be used to discuss all entries for both contests.

2. Contest Eligibility.

The 90-day PR membership rule has been waived for participation in these contests. Anyone may enter either contest (remember, though, you enter only one of the contests, not both), regardless of length of PR membership. However, only those who have met the 90-day PR membership requirement may cast votes. (See No. 5 below, Prizes and Voting Requirements.)

3. Defining Sewing Level and Ability.

We leave it to you to define your sewing level and ability, with the aid of these qualifiers:

If you think you truly are a Beginner, then you probably have no doubt about your categorization as such, and you should choose the Beginner Contest. However, if you think you may fall somewhere between Advanced Beginner and Intermediate and aren't sure whether you qualify to enter the Advanced Beginner Contest, the following list of skills will aid you in making your decision. If you've attempted and are proficient with more than 5 of the following techniques, then you're ready to bump yourself up to the Intermediate level. (Congratulations!)

A. Zippers (lapped, slot, fly, invisible)
B. Buttonholes
C. Facing
D. Lining
E. Curved seams (such as princess seams)
F. Collars
G. Set-in sleeves
H. Welt pockets
I. Sewing with knits
J. Various hand stitches, including but not limited to: hemstitch, fell stitch, hand rolled hem, catch stitch.

4. Contest Entry Requirements.

A. Beginner: Make any sewn item. Such item may be a garment, an accessory or a home dec project.

B. Advanced Beginner: Make a garment incorporating at least one technique that is new to you.

C. The following applies to entries in both contests:

(1) Write a review of your project, complete with a picture of the finished item.
(2) In addition to the standard information on the review template, the review should include:

(a) A very brief description of your previous sewing experience.
(b) Information regarding what outside help you may have received, other than online help here on PR.
(c) If you are entering a garment into the Advanced Beginner Contest, please describe which technique(s) was new to you.
(d) If your item was made as a part of a class, please note this in the review. Additionally, if the item was made as part of a class, the instructor must not have had any part in stitching or construction.

5. Prizes and Voting Requirements.

1st and 2nd prizes will be awarded for the Beginner Contest.

1st and 2nd prizes will be awarded for the Advanced Beginner Contest.

* * * 1st Prize: Choice of an online class + 1 year of Friends of Pattern Review (FoPR) membership * * *

* * * 2nd Prize: A free pattern and a PR button * * *

1st-place winners in both contests will be chosen by a panel of judges (to be determined).

2nd-place winners in both contests will be determined by membership vote. Each PR member who meets the qualifying membership date (membership prior to April 1, 2009) will be allowed one vote per contest. As previously noted, the 90-day PR membership requirement has been waived for entry in the contests, but you must have the 90-day membership in order to vote in either of the contests.

* * * End of Contest Rules * * *

These contests are as much about advancing your skills and learning within the context of the group setting as they are about the contests themselves. You won't find a more rewarding, friendly, cohesive environment in which to learn and HAVE FUN than among your friends here on Pattern Review. During my time as a member, I have come to know several PR members whom I consider to be lifelong friends (whether they like it or not), and I owe it all to Deepika!

And speaking of Deepika, she has put together a WONDERFUL tutorial on how to enter PR contests. You can get there via this link:

Contest Tutorial

Now, SALLY FORTH and, most importantly, HAVE FUN! (Just DON'T call me SALLY!) :o)

* * *

List of Questions and Answers

* * *

Question: By "new to us" does that mean we've never even tried it before? Or, like in the New Techniques Contest, can it be one we've tried once and have been unsuccessful doing?

Answer: The rules are silent on this point, but in my view, we want to encourage members to join the contest and, with that in mind, I would say it could be either something you've never tried before or something at which you have tried but have been thus far unsuccessful.

* * *

Question: Also, not to be a brat, but shouldn't this be April 1st, instead of March?

Answer: You are correct! And believe it or not, I actually counted that up in my head, and I STILL got it wrong.

* * *

Question: For the technique that is new (whatever the definition of new is, pending answer to the above post), does it have to be one that is in the list you gave? Can it be something else? Or does that open the door to too many things?

Answer: It does not have to be from the list of skill sets given within the rules. That list is provided to help those who are unsure whether they fall into the "Advanced Beginner" category or the "Intermediate" category. The thinking is that if someone is actually at the Intermediate level, they would have an unfair advantage were they to compete against Advanced Beginners. Therefore, the list was provided only to help them decide which group they fall into.

* * *

Question: Pardon me if this is a silly question, or if I can find the answer elsewhere (if so, let me know where!). On what criteria are the entries judged? Is it just subjective (e.g., I think that dress is pretty, I'm going to vote for it)? Successfully accomplishing a new technique? Both? Other? I'm totally new to contests and never even thought about entering one before, so I don't know much!

Answer: This year's judges will set their own criteria, but just to give you an idea, the following is a list of the types of things the judges may look for. Please know that these are not hard and fast judging criteria that I'm listing, but just guidelines to give you an idea of the sorts of things the judges will likely look at:

* Does the review follow all the rules as set forth on the first page of the thread? If all of the required information is not provided, or the rules were not followed, this could be cause for disqualification.

* Is the reviewer precise about his or her skill level or somewhat vague? Strive for precision in your descriptions and your explanations.

* Reviews that contain many pictures showing details of the item are easier to judge than those with dark and/or far-away pictures in which details are not readily discernible.

* Your garments are not expected to look as if they have been made by an Intermediate, Advanced or Couture level sewist. In the past, however, the judges have been impressed by the quality and high standards of the garments entered in these contests, so strive for YOUR best!

I looked back to find the first and second place winners from last year's contests, and I'm linking the reviews here. I thought they would serve as examples for you as to the quality of the photos posted and the clarity of descriptions that were included within their reviews, not only that they used the standard review template, but that they also included the information that is required per contest rules (sewing experience, outside help, new technique(s) used, whether garment was made as part of a class, etc.)

2008 Beginner Contest First Place Winner

2008 Advanced Beginner Contest First Place Winner

2008 Beginner Contest Second Place Winner

2008 Advanced Beginner Contest Second Place Winner

* * *

Question: I was about to start on a romper for my rolling lint and dog fur collector daughter, when it dawned on me that there are TWO things in it I've never done before. Since the sewing for children contest is about to end while this one is about to start... obviously it makes sense to wait a few days. How much prep can we do? I've cut the pattern, but not the fabric. Can I lay out the fabric yet?

Answer: Any muslin, alterations, etc., may be done prior to the July 1 start date, but no work on the actual garment may begin until July 1. Fabric may be prewashed, but not laid out and/or cut. So in other words, prior to the July 1 start date, no work on the actual contest garment may be done, but pattern prep and fabric prep may be done.

Question: Could you please confirm whether this contest is for 1 month or 2 months? Sorry, just getting a bit confused because last year's Beginner's contest was for 1 month.

Answer: Yes, it is INDEED for two months, July 1 through August 31. Thanks.
What machine embroidery thread works best in your machine? posted by Sewing Diva Susan

I work for a dealership that carries Isacord, Floriani and Madeira and Robison. So as you can imagine I have a lot of those 4 brands. But I know some seem to run better in one machine than another. What brand works best in your machine, oh and please include the make and model of your machine. I personally like Floriani the best of the 4 listed above, followed by Isacord, both are poly, I just perfer poly over rayon. I have several embroidery machines, plus the use of all current models of Babylock, Bernina, Janome, Pfaff and Viking. And one day a well I teach on the new Brother Quattro. Babylock and Brother seem to be fussy about what thread you use, others are a little more forgiving.

Last post by sew2006 at Fri 03 Jul 2009 09:55:17 PM Total posts: 25

I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread specifically for the Janome Coverpro CoverStitch Machines CP900 & CP1000, as there have been many helpful details mentioned re these machines...however, it is scattered throughout several threads and the information is difficult to locate.
Schmetz ELX705 Needles or the Organ equivalent, are the only type to use in the Coverpro machines
The ELX705 needles are specifically made for Cover Stitch and referred to in the manual. Ball point, sharp and stretch needles are not recommended.

Organ also make an equivalent needle and these can be purchased in larger amounts online. Search for Organ ELX705.
How to Pivot around Corners

from artfulsage page 161
Date: 6/20/07 5:57 PM
I asked how to do outside corners with the CoverPro 1000 and received some good ideas. I also e-mail Janome education with the question and thought I would post their answer for every one.
Here it is:
You must remember that the coverstitch is created with two or three
needles so a perfect 90 degree pivot at corners will not be possible.
But with planning and patience a corner can be achieved in this manner:
Stop slightly ahead of the corner and manually turn the hand wheel until
the needles are in the lowest position. You will hear a slight "tick"
when the needles are in the lowest position. Lift the presser foot and
turn the fabric slightly in the direction you need to achieve either an
inside or outside corner. Manually turn the hand wheel until the needles
have made one stitch and are again in the lowest position. Lift the
presser foot and turn the fabric slightly in the needed direction.
Continue on for as many stitches as it takes to turn the corner. When
you have made the turn start the machine and sew as usual.
Thank you very much for your response about the extension table, Vonne. The Elna 434 extension table is exactly the same as the Janome CP1000 table. I have bought one.

I have received my Nina CP1000 (it is exactly the same one as Janome CP1000) with accessories on Thursday and I have ordered the binding attachments from the guy on ebay. I love this machine.

I really want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for this forum. I read all of the info on this forum before I have ordered the machine.
Enjoy your sewing.
Show off your vintage patterns posted by drsue

I thought it'd be fun to have a thread for sharing pics of some of our vintage patterns. I know I'll never make most of these gems. Here is a selection from different decades.

1930's. I think this looks like it could easily be worn today.

1940's. this is for wovens but I think its perfect for a light jersey.

It's summer time.

Have you gotten requests to teach sewing? Did you say yes?

Have you ever taught sewing before? Did you just say no?

Well, this thread isn't really a "sew-along." It's a place for beginner teachers to share:

questions,
ideas,
experiences,
and of course,
frustrations
Repairing costumes- would like costume sewing advice! posted by minggiddylooloo

Within three days of arriving in IL from TX, I serendipitously came upon an ad in a local sewing machine store for a seamstress to help mend costumes for a costume shop. I was hired yesterday, and I will be working 30 hours a week for the next couple of months mending costumes they lend out for productions of Beauty and the Beast and the Producers.

My "academic" sewing experience includes pattern drafting and clothing construction/alterations courses, but those skills won't really come into play since I won't be building costumes from scratch.

I'm a home sewing hobbyist, and the owner knows this and after seeing some of my garments and a last minute portfolio (my official portfolio is in storage out of state unfortunately) she hired me. I will be working with two other seamstresses, one of whom has never taken any official courses, the other one's experience I'm not sure.

We'll be fixing hems, seams, buttons, clasps, zippers, etc. I know how to do these things already, along with more advanced techniques which most likely won't be used in costume repairs (hong kong seams, welt pockets, french seams, etc) but I'm hoping to get some insight from those who sew costumes to share techniques/advice to help me become an efficient costume repair sewer and in the process of mending, help make the costumes more durable.

I've been told a lot of this is grunt work and not the high couture mimicking sewing I've been trying to do for my own clothes, but that's okay because I'm here to learn. The owner was also curious about my computer drafting skills, so I might end up doing some side projects for her since she's a petite plus sized woman who has a hard time finding clothes that fit well.

I wasn't planning on getting a job during this summer since I was going to study for my GRE exams once I arrived at my parents, but it looks like this was just a lucky opportunity I stumbled upon.

TIA for any insight you can provide!
Advice on boning, and a few other things for my sister's wedding dress posted by Coluber42

I'm hard at work on my sister's wedding dress. I'm making my own pattern from scratch based on about 18 months of her changing her mind about how she wants it to look. :P
But I have a number of random questions, and I'm looking for some advice.
First, does anyone have any rules of thumb for where to put boning? The dress has princess seams but has a really picked-up skirt in back, so there's going to be a fair amount of weight hanging out back there (especially when the train is bustled). It will have a very low V-neckline in the back, and a not-so-low front. The obvious locations for bones seem to be at the seams, but I feel like that might not be enough.
Next, is it crazy of me to be thinking of using horsehair braid in the neckline to help it keep its shape? I've never heard of doing that, but it seems like it might help keep the very low back from gaping.
The skirt will be "picked up" a little in the front and a lot in the back. Does anyone have any preferred methods for tacking the pick-ups down to the lining? Should I be using a second layer of lining in addition to the one that the pick-ups will be tacked to? Any ideas for how to stabilize the lining against the weight of the skirt? (will this even be an issue? I have some rayon for the lining, with cotton broadcloth underlining and silk dupioni fashion fabric. I wasn't there when any of it was picked out)
Any favorite ways of hemming the train? A catch-stitch hem doesn't seem to be a great idea for something that drags on the floor.

I know, it's a bunch of random questions, but I'm grateful for any input!

Last post by barblh at Fri 03 Jul 2009 09:02:13 PM Total posts: 13

4th of July sales posted by corinne kelly

I know lots of places are having sales and one in particular that I would like to draw attention to----our own Melody at www.fashionistafabrics .com
She already has really good prices and now they are even better. I ordered the Embroidered White Cotton and would have ordered more fabrics if I were able. (we are in an extreme downsize mode due to layoffs) This particular fabric is on at least two other sites for much more. Anyway, thought I'd let others know about the sale and would love to hear what others are scooping up for the sales. Please share.
-- Edited on 7/3/09 9:46 PM --

Last post by minggiddylooloo at Fri 03 Jul 2009 08:54:51 PM Total posts: 4

Thigh chafing posted by JuneHawk

I love skirts and dresses. I like how they look on me, I like their femininity, the fact that they can be very cool in this summer heat etc so I would like to be able to sew more of them. The problem is, my thighs chafe if I don't wear something underneath the skirt or dress. This defies the purpose of light, summery clothes but it's either that or be unable to walk for days.

Anyhow, how do you get round this? Is there a lightweight, breathable alternatives to pantyhose/shorts, etc?

Last post by JuneHawk at Fri 03 Jul 2009 08:53:51 PM Total posts: 14

Bernina White Pearl (230) problem posted by Copyright72

When I do a zig zag (standard default length and width setting), randomly I get a loop or loose stitch on the top. The bottom is fine. A couple of times it has happened on the straight stitch but not as often as the zig zag. This happens on different fabrics, with different needles, different threads, etc. and doesn't seem to matter. The bobbin winds excellent, I double check that it's in the bobbin case the right way also. The top is also threaded right. When it doesn't have the occasional loop, the tension and stitches are great. Does anyone know why this would happen, has had it happen on their activas, or what to do to fix it? This last year I think I'm cursed with machine problems!

Last post by clc74 at Fri 03 Jul 2009 08:28:55 PM Total posts: 9

Schmetz needle box posted by tourist

Aside from being a good substitute "bump jumper" tool, the Schmetz needle box is also exactly 1 1/4" wide and 1 3/4" long. A perfect template if you happen to need to measure one of those sizes. <- grin would be bigger if I had measured the darn thing right in the first place, but still.....

Last post by Doris W. in TN at Fri 03 Jul 2009 08:14:25 PM Total posts: 5

Somebody pinch me.
Okay, okay... calm down, geek, calm down. You know you gotta test drive it. You just can't plunk down $1K for a machine you haven't even touched!
